Quality Awards 2007

TAFE NSW Quality Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate significant staff outcomes which improve the quality of teaching and learning in TAFE NSW. The Showcase of projects and Awards Ceremony were hosted by Western Sydney Institute at Rosehill Gardens Function Centre on 15 November 2007.  

Of the 96 exhibits at the showcase, 89 were TAFE NSW projects representing teams from across NSW sharing project outcomes with colleagues, industry and community organisations. Over 700 enthusiastic visitors met project teams and participating sponsor representatives during the afternoon.

Susan Hartigan, Director of TAFE NSW – Western Sydney Institute, commented, “All the projects submitted for the showcase and assessment demonstrated initiative, a great capacity to generate ideas and to work effectively and positively in a team environment.”

Five hundred and fifty people attended the Awards Ceremony following the showcase. Guests included the Minister for Education and Training, John Della Bosca MLC, who was welcomed by the Chair, NSW TAFE Commission Board Ms Sandra Yates AO.

Teaching and Learning Practices

South Western Sydney Institute for a project simplifying the processes for recognising the prior learning of students in the vocational education and training sector, “RPL Online Network.”

Planning, Processes and Systems

Hunter Institute for their project, “HOPE, Hunter Online Planning Environment” improving the effectiveness of planning in service delivery.

Workforce Development

Western Sydney Institute for their project, “A Fresh Approach to RPL” focused on streamlining services to  recognise previous learning of students, improving resources for teachers, customer service, and  promotional material.

Business Relationships and Quality Project of the Year

Western Sydney Institute for “Together we do it better.” For the partnership the team built on relationships with local industry providing opportunities for students to become involved in over twenty community activities in Western Sydney.

The Peter Wright Award for Excellence in Teaching

Winner: Rod Lalor

Rod taught Fitting and Machining at South Western Sydney Institute, Chullora Campus. Rod followed a quality approach by building continuous improvement into workplace projects for his students which met their needs as well as those of their employers.  Rod consulted closely with local employers in developing training plans for his apprentice students. Many have since completed apprenticeships and become successful tradespeople.
