TAFE NSW: Doing business in the 21st Century – Update

Following the release of public consultation documents in November 2007 and February 2008, advice and input from TAFE NSW staff and stakeholders has confirmed reforms to develop the capability of TAFE NSW Institutes.

After extensive consultations involving approximately 2 500 participants, initiatives are being implemented to ensure TAFE NSW keeps in step with industry and labour force developments and meets individual needs in a rapidly changing and challenging social and economic environment.

As part of the next stage of the project the Deputy Director-General TAFE and Community Education, Marie Persson, has released to staff a proposed re-alignment of TAFE NSW central support services to better assist Institutes to respond faster and more flexibly to student, industry, community needs.

The proposal is to group TAFE support services into four Portfolio areas:

  • Training and Education Support
  • Customer Support
  • Business
  • Strategy

Other developments underway as part of the TAFE NSW: Doing business in the 21st Century initiative include:

  • Spending $1 million immediately as the first phase of up-skilling 10,000 TAFE staff over three years in areas such as information technology, teaching practice and operating in a business environment
  • Investing $4.5 million to upgrade TAFE digital information systems as the initial phase of TAFE NSW business and learning systems development and
  • Establishing a TAFE 'Teachers Portal' website for teachers state-wide to quickly access the latest training resources.

Summary of proposed organisational functions supporting Institutes

The overview chart shows that the coordination and support functions for TAFE NSW Institutes are to be aligned under four TAFE NSW Portfolio areas:

Training and Education Support: will undertake the broad functions of resource development, quality assurance, specialist advice, industry and community liaison, advice on vocational access and social inclusion and TAFE workforce development. It will comprise six units, four of which are aligned to industry and education specialisations.

Customer Support: will undertake the broad functions of student operations, information, promotions and knowledge services as well as management of business and learning systems. It will comprise two units.

Business: will undertake the broad functions of national business development and strategic advice to Institutes on commercial intelligence, international projects and planning and management of international students. It will comprise three units.

Strategy: will undertake the broad functions of strategic policy, planning and purchasing, and performance and accountability. It will comprise three units.
