Hat couture at TAFE NSW
2 July 2008
TAFE NSW – Sydney Institute is turning out the next big names in couture millinery, with this year's millinery students displaying their stunning new ranges for their final assessment and photo shoot at The Muse, Ultimo College.
Teacher Jane Stoddart, a milliner herself with over 20 years of experience in the industry, says the class of 2008 has turned out a fantastic range of hats and headwear, designed as part of their Certificate IV in Millinery at Ultimo.
"The Certificate IV trains students for work as self-employed milliners or for employment in the industry," she says. "This class has not yet graduated but already many have set up their own businesses with their own established clientele, and others have gained employment with milliners."
"Our students learn how to design their own hat collections and carry the same design theme through each range they create. They learn how to create couture, or custom designed hats and promote themselves effectively in the luxury marketplace."
Lindsay Mathieson, a 2008 student, gained a career position in the industry as a result of her TAFE NSW training with Annandale Milliner, Sandie Bizys.
Lindsay says, "Being at TAFE has been a very inspiring experience for me. It is fantastic for networking and sharing ideas with people."
